Obituary for M.V. "Kelly" Kalaycioglu

M.V. "Kelly" Kalaycioglu
Dr. M.V. (Kelly) Kalaycioglu of Shinnston passed away in his home on Saturday, November 4, 2017, following an extended illness. He was born on March 15, 1925, in Izmir, Turkey, a son of the late Etem and Leman Kalaycioglu. Dr. Kalaycioglu, or “Doc” as he’s affectionately known, is survived by his wife, Guney (Jeanny) Pekgoz Kalaycioglu, whom he married on September 26, 1952. Also surviving are their children, Phyllis (Bruce) Gore of Lake Floyd community, Matt (Linda) Kalaycio, MD, of Cleveland, OH, Denise (Mark) Sullivan of Ithaca, NY, his brother, Tanzer (Linda) Kalayci of Plantation, FL; grandchildren, Kelli Gore of Lake Floyd community, Patrick Gore of Lake Floyd community, Mollie Kalaycio of Columbus, OH, Jason Kalaycio of Cleveland, OH, Rachel Kalaycio of Cleveland, OH, and Emily Sullivan of Ithaca, NY.
Dr. Kalaycioglu came to the United States to do a residency at St Alexis Hospital in Cleveland, before coming to Broaddus Hospital in Philippi, WV. He returned to Sloan Kettering Institute in New York, NY for additional training and in 1962 he began his practice in Shinnston where he continued till his retirement in 2000. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of Southern Medical Association, American Medical Association and the Harrison County Medical Society for which he served as President. He was a member of St. John’s Lodge #24 AF & AM and he was a Nemesis Shriner. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Shinnston where he was a former deacon and trustee. He loved his Sunday school class where he shared his knowledge of Middle Eastern history.
“Doc” enjoyed going to the WVU games with his buddies in addition to tending to his orchids and reading volumes of medical literature. His pride and joy was his children and grandchildren to whom he gave his wisdom and endless love.
Dr. Kalaycioglu was welcomed by a small community at a time when a physician was needed and the physician needed a home. He treated his patients with a gentleness and compassion that is still remembered today.
The family would like to thank Dr. Dubberke and his staff, the staff at Meadowview Manor and Visiting Angels, Belinda, Kay, Anita and Brianna. A special thank you to Pastor Kevin Nuzum, and Dave Ayers.
Family and friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home, 300 S Pike St, Shinnston, Monday from 3-7 PM. He will lie in state from 10- 11AM on Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Shinnston.
